Advocating for Literacy

The National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) has launched its new online Advocacy Clearinghouse and Toolkit. The toolkit contains dozens of resources, facts and reports provided by member organizations of the NCL and is a one stop shop for all advocates interested in improving adult education. The materials in the toolkit are essential for adult education advocacy efforts on both the federal and state level. You can access the toolkit at www.ncladvocacy.org.

The Change Agent Health Issue

The Change Agent has just published a special issue on health: 56 pages of short articles, illustrations, cartoons, math lessons, and quizzes explore students experiences dealing with health challenges and their individual- and community-based responses to those challenges. Learn about the U.S. health insurance industry, student-recommended home remedies, students experiences of health disparities, tips and tricks for being healthy, the connection between mental and physical health and much more. Featuring ready-to-use lesson plans, personal stories, and lots of graphics, The Change Agent is perfect for a multi-level ABE and/or ESOL classroom.

Order a classroom set. A bulk subscription (25 copies of each issue, 2 issues a year) costs only $60. Or you can order an individual subscription (one- or two-year subscriptions are available for $10 and
$18 respectively). SUBSCRIBE NOW by visiting our web site
www.nelrc.org/changeagent or calling 617-482-9485.

ORDER IN BULK so that all your students can have their own copy of this inspiring issue.

Support the ongoing work of The Change Agent to make social justice part of the adult education classroom.

NYC Information about Government Benefits

New York City has created a new website, ACCESS NYC, to “promote self-sufficiency among New York City’s residents by providing greater access to benefit programs offered by City, State, and Federal government agencies.” Although this site could use plain language editing, this is an important step in the effort to get benefit information to those who need it. The url is https://a858-ihss.nyc.gov/ihss1/en_US/IHSS_homePage.do

Bookbinders’ Guild of New York Annual Softball Game
