LAC Family Literacy Program
The goals of the LAC’s family literacy program are to:
- Strengthen, enhance, and expand adult and family literacy services in New York
- Enhance the visibility of the broad range of programs that provide literacy and other educational services for parents, children and families
- Build a network of providers that will strengthen services by sharing information and best practices
- Identify and draw the attention of public and private funders to the areas of greatest need in family literacy
The first phase of the program, a survey of NYC family literacy programs, resulted in our interactive family literacy resource directory to help programs share information and make referrals and in a report on family literacy services in NYC. We also offer professional development for family literacy providers.
Theme-Based Instruction in Critical Content
This new, four-part course will help family literacy teachers and others gain experience in developing curricula in critical content areas. They will learn how to use a theme-based approach to developing instruction so that families they work with acquire skills they need to navigate various social systems.
Topics include:
Reading Workshop for Parents, Jan. 24 (full/registration closed)
Arts & Literacy, Feb. 26
Health Literacy, Mar. 25
Community & Family Economics, Apr. 22
