Day 4, Handout 1
The Peer Review Process

  1. Reintroduce yourselves to the other members of your group.
  2. For each peer review, select a facilitator/recorder and a timekeeper in addition to the presenter. The facilitator/recorder and timekeeper can remain the same for each peer review or rotate, depending on the preference of the group.
  3. Conduct a 45-minute peer review of each instructional plan. Each peer review should follow the exact same format and adhere to the same time guidelines:
    • Presenter walks through their entire instructional plan – 10 minutes
    • Group members provide uninterrupted positive feedback – 5 minutes
    • Group members provide uninterrupted constructive criticism – 5 minutes
    • Presenter responds to the positive feedback and constructive criticism and engages in open discussion with the group members – 10 minutes
    • Group members make specific recommendations and the presenter collaborates with group member to create a concrete “action plan” – 15 minutes

When providing positive feedback and constructive criticism, group members may wish to keep the following questions in mind:

  • Does this “learning experience” relate to the GED?
  • Does this learning experience relate to, and draw on, students’ lives beyond the classroom?
  • Does this learning experience incorporate promising practices such as interdisciplinary, theme-based learning; project-based learning; or the integration of multiple intelligences?
  • Does this learning experience incorporate collaborative learning?
  • Does this learning experience incorporate hands-on activities and/or authentic materials?
  • Does this learning experience provide opportunities for students to construct knowledge themselves?
  • Does this learning experience cultivate critical thinking and higher-order thinking skills?
  • Does this learning experience challenge students?
  • Does this learning experience engage students?
  • Does this learning experience provide opportunities for students to demonstrate learning?
  • Is this instructional plan clear, well-structured and well-sequenced?
  • Is there room in this instructional plan for flexibility and student choice?
  • Will the purpose and structure of this instructional plan be clear and reasonable to students?

At the end of each peer review, take a 15-minute break before moving on to the next presenter.

This process has been adapted from the Statewide Peer Review process developed by the New York State Academy for Teaching and Learning.

Day 4, Handout 2
Homework Assignment

Based on the feedback and constructive criticism you received as part of the peer review process, revise your GED instructional plan in accordance with the action steps you outlined. For our next session, please bring:

  • one copy of your draft instructional plan
  • five copies of your revised instructional plan
  • five copies of all the materials you need to implement your revised plan

Day 4 Evaluation

  • What did you learn from today’s session? How might you incorporate what you learned into your work?
  • In what ways was this session disappointing?
  • On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest), how would you rate the quality of today’s session? Please explain your answer:
  • What suggestions would you make for improving any of the specific activities?
  • What suggestions would you make for better achieving any of the specific objectives?
  • Do you have any other comments you’d like to share with the facilitator?
