ESOL Resources

Integrating the World Wide Web into ESOL Instruction

Sample Lesson #1: Superlatives ESOL

Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Website: Roadside America
URL: http://www.roadsideamerica.com
Vocabulary: tourist attraction
Objectives:

  • To practice using superlatives
  • To learn new superlatives and other vocabulary
  • To gain an understanding of American popular culture
  • To practice navigating a website using text links and image maps

Step
Class Brainstorm/Mind Map

  • What are some tourist attractions in NYC?
  • What are some of the largest, smallest, tallest, strangest, and most amazing things you have seen in the United States?

Step 2
Go to Roadside America Explain to students that this is a website that features the most unusual tourist attractions in the U.S.

Step 3
Click on The Electric Map

Step 4
Instruct students (working in small groups or independently) to select three states. Students click on the state (from the map or the list) and read about the tourist attractions of that state. At each state, instruct students to make a list of the largest, smallest, tallest, shortest, and strangest attractions they read about. Depending on their ESOL level, they can also write descriptions of the attractions.

Step 5
Ask students to report back to the class on the attractions they visited.

This lesson was developed by Emily Hacker for the Literacy Assistance Center, 1999.
